About the event
Chanoyu, the Japanese Tea Ceremony is a tradition spanning nearly 400 years. Join me for an experiential evening where you will get to watch the meditative performance (temae) of preparing a bowl of matcha. You will have the opportunity to participate in the ceremony as a guest (under instruction) in the traditional manner as well as have a go at whisking your own bowl of matcha.
I will perform at least two temae (making the tea) as well as giving a short introduction to the tradition of Chanoyu and some specifics about the Samurai school of tea that I actively study. You'll also learn about matcha growing & production and get tips on how to choose a good matcha yourself.
Guests will have the opportunity to have a go at whisking their own bowl of matcha with expert technique tips from myself. I'll demonstrate two different ways of whisking as well as talking about how you can incorporate matcha and mindful tea drinking into your life.
A seasonal sweet will be served with each bowl of matcha.
My favoured Matcha Aorashi, direct from the farm in Japan, will be available for sale, along with Chasen (bamboo whisks), essential for preparing great matcha yourself. Ask me about other teas on the night.
Arrival from 6.30pm. I aim to begin the first temae at 6.45pm. If you anticipate you might arrive later, please let me know when booking.
